The Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina has four popular North Carolina ski resorts within a few minutes drive of Boone NC. Each resort offers terrain suitable for everyone from beginners to the more experienced skier to enjoy as well as other winter activities such as ice skating or snow tubing.
 
Sugar Mountain Resort
Sugar Mountain is a ski mountain located in Banner Elk NC, just a 25 minute drive from Boone North Carolina. Sugar Mountain is one of the largest ski mountains in the area with over 115 acres of skiable terrain. Sugar Mountain has a respected ski school to teach children or adults how to ski or snowboard. Whether you are a beginner or just want some tips on how to perfect your techniques, Sugar Mountain offers group and individual lessons with great hourly rates. From beginner slopes to black diamonds and a terrain park, Sugar has something to keep everyone enjoying this Western North Carolina ski resort. The elevation at Sugar’s summit is 5,300 feet with a 1,200 foot vertical drop. The longest run from top to bottom that Sugar offers is a little over 1 ˝ miles of downhill skiing. In addition to their great skiing terrain they also have snow tubing and ice skating available.

Hawksnest
Hawksnest is known as the “local’s favorite” in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina because of the less crowded lift lines and late night skiing on the weekends. Although Hawksnest is a smaller mountain, they do not leave out any amenities and features that the larger mountains provide. Hawksnest provides over 20 acres of skiable terrain with 100% snowmaking capabilities. The elevation of Hawksnest is over 4,819 feet above sea level with a vertical drop of 619 feet! Offering beginner slopes and black diamonds, Hawksnest is a great place for the beginner to ski or board as well as the more experienced. They offer individual and group lessons at their ski school to learn the techniques of being an accomplished skier or snowboarder. If you are not interested in skiing, Hawksnest also has an exciting snow tubing run. They have a great lodge where you can warm up by the fire and enjoy a snack to re-energize yourself for more skiing. Hawksnest is also known to have some big air hits and several boxes in their terrain park for the thrill seekers to enjoy. There is no wonder why Hawksnest is one of the favorite North Carolina ski resorts in the area.

Beech Mountain Ski Resort
Beech Mountain, located just minutes from Sugar Mountain is the highest ski area in the eastern part of North America with its summit being 5,506 feet above sea level. The vertical drop of this North Carolina ski mountain is 830 feet with easy and challenging ways to make it down to the bottom. They have terrain that is perfect for any level of skier or boarder whether you are looking to learn, go fast or hit one of their several snow jumps and boxes available. With a complete ski school and rentals department you will have everything you will need to become a skier or snowboarder. They have several restaurants and cafeterias with activities for the non skier where you can watch your group ski to the bottom. At Beech Mountain ski resort there are several shops in the village that have everything you will need from chap stick to equipment and gear to enjoy your NC ski vacation. At Beech Mountain you can also enjoy outdoor ice skating. Beech is very accommodating for larger groups so be sure to contact their group sales office to get rates for your party.

Appalachian Ski Mountain
Appalachian Ski Mountain is located between Boone and Blowing Rock just 10 minutes outside of Boone. Appalachian Ski Mountain is known for having the best terrain park in the Southeast region. Their park is sponsored and built by the experts at Boarders Paradise, a local board shop that excels in providing the latest equipment available. Skiers and snowboarders can do all kinds of tricks off of their many snow jumps, rails and boxes. In 2007 Appalachian ski mountain put in a state of the art snowmaking machine that provides 100% snowmaking capabilities and can make over 1 million pounds of snow in as little as 1 hour! There are trails ranging from green (easiest) to black (most difficult) to provide something for every level to enjoy. The French-Swiss ski college is the oldest ski school in the Southeast and will provide beginners with the best lessons around. Appalachian also has an outdoor ice skating area that has beautiful backdrops of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
