Linville Caverns NC - Linville NC

Linville Caverns
Linville Caverns is another Blue Ridge Mountain attraction that many people in the area like to check out. North Carolina’s first and only caverns were first discovered by local fisherman in the early part of the 19th century and in 1939 the commercial tours began at the caverns to display their unique geology and biology and show visitors a fascinating glimpse at what an underground cave is truly like.

Created by the natural spring at the mountain, carbon dioxide and mineral deposits, the caverns were created by the dissolving limestone and dolomite, which cut passages through the mountain rock. The caverns are still actively changing and forming so you will see a spectacular display of color.

When you take a tour of the inside of the gorgeous caverns you’ll be educated about the different geological aspects of the cave as well as the animal life inside the cave. Researchers have noted the presence of the Eastern Pipistrelle Bats as well as the native fish that reside in the caverns flowing stream water. In fact, it is widely known that the fish living inside the cave are blind as no natural light ever passes through the caverns and they are generally accustomed to being in the dark. During your walk-through tour of Linville Caverns NC you’ll also be able to stand over the “bottomless pool”, and learn about the researchers that once tried to reach the bottom of the pool, and never did, hence how it got its name.

Linville Caverns NC is just one of the many beautiful, and natural attractions you’ll find in the High Country.
