Grandfather Mountain in
North Carolina
Grandfather Mountain is a mountain located
near Boone NC that is a very popular North
Carolina Attraction for residents and tourists alike. At 5,964 feet
above sea level, Grandfather Mountain in North
Carolina is the
highest peak in the eastern part of the Blue
Ridge Mountains NC. The park has operated as a

spend an entire day at Grandfather Mountain in

One
of Grandfather Mountain’s most known attractions
is The Mile High Swinging Bridge that is often
referred to as the highlight of the trip. The
bridge allows easy access to spectacular long
range views of the Blue Ridge mountains. It was
originally built in 1952 and was rebuilt in
1999. Today, the bridge is a 228 foot suspension
bridge that uses the original towers to link a
path from one mountain peak to another.
There is easy access to the top of Grandfather
Mountain by driving, however many people choose
to hike to the top. There are 11 trails varying
in levels of difficulty with a moderately easy
trail from ¼ mile from the summit that leads you
to the Swinging Bridge. Many of the other trails
inside of Grandfather Mountain NC lead you to other views
that you can enjoy. Hiking the trails inside of
Grandfather is included in the admission price
allowing for a full day of hiking along with all
the other features Grandfather offers.
Grandfather is also a wildlife sanctuary and
nature preserve that is home to many species of
animals and birds. There are many wildlife
habitats for visitors to view animals in their
natural habitats as they were built around the
natural surroundings that the mountain provides.
One of the visitor’s favorites is the black bear
habitat which is home to eight bears. In
Grandfather’s sanctuary there are also habitats
for river otters, cougars, eagles and
white-tailed deer.
Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina has dollar days in April
where residents of Boone NC and the surrounding
areas can spend a day at Grandfather for only
$1.00 a person. Grandfather is also home to one
of North America’s largest Highland Games
events. This event last over a weekend and draws
visitors from all over the world. The Highland
Games is hosted to celebrate the Scottish
ancestry. You can enjoy a variety of traditional
Scottish games, music, food and arts and crafts.
Grandfather Mountain is a favorite attraction
for residents and visitors of Boone NC offering
a full day of activities in the beautiful
outdoors in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
